There is a very exciting home being built in the Greater NW that many people (to include many real estate brokers) don’t really know about.

A NW Energy Star home is 15% more efficient than a similar home built to code of the same year.

If you are concerned about rising energy costs, reducing your carbon foot-print or if you are simply just tired of being cold in your own home, well than you may want to learn a little bit about energy star homes.

Homes that have earned the ENERGY STAR label are at least 15% more efficient than homes built to current state building codes. These homes improve the overall construction quality and provide homeowners with better built, more comfortable homes that can only be achieved through ENERGY STAR.

Northwest ENERGY STAR homes are better built, more comfortable homes that save you money on your utility bills every month. Every Northwest ENERGY STAR certified home has been built to meet energy efficiency guidelines set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency. From energy-efficient windows to advanced heating and cooling systems, ENERGY STAR homes guarantee greater savings, comfort and peace-of-mind. Simply stated, ENERGY STAR homes are built better for you and the environment.

The Northwest Multiple Listing Service now allows me to search for NW Energy Star homes, however many real estate brokers don’t fully understand what it means to be a NW Energy Star home and sometimes they are advertising a home as Energy Star simply because one or two of the household appliances are Energy Star.

If you are serious about buying a home that isn’t an energy hog, there are a couple of things you can do to protect yourself.

    1. Work with a REALTOR who has received their GREEN certification from the National Association of REALTORS
    2. Verify the certification of any NW Energy Star home online by clicking here. If it’s a NW Energy Star home, it will be listed here.

Not every home can be a NW Energy Star home, but every home can be more efficient.  By working with a REALTOR with Green certification you ensure that whatever home you buy, you’ll have the most up to date information available about its energy consumption and ways to improve the efficiency of your investment.

  1. […] The good news for homeowner’s in the Northwest is that our energy code is fairly comprehensive.  Energy Star actually had to make a specific program to cover the NW because an Energy Star home is represented to be 15% more energy-efficient than a home built to current code. Because the energy code in Washington is more comprehensive than say Kansas, Energy Star created the Northwest Energy Star certification. Read more about NW Energy Star homes here.  […]
