    The Tahoma School District strives to prepare every student to graduate with attainable post-high schools plans for success, from the moment they first enter their school system. According to GreatSchools.Org, the Tahoma school district ranked an 8 out of 10 based on test results. To learn more about how GreatSchools.Org rates schools in Washington State, click hereNiche ranked Tahoma in the top 10 for 2016 Best School Districts in Washington. With 9 schools, serving approximately 7,900 students around Maple Valley, Tahoma is recognized for its innovative development and use of curriculum, which produces students who test on average among the state’s top 10%.

    Sustainability in the District 

    “Our Vision: Creating a better future by educating responsible citizens who will contribute in positive ways to the local and world community. We believe that one of the most critical issues facing our young people is the issue of sustainability…” 

    Tahoma works very hard to teach it’s students the importance of sustainability. They press this matter during school lunches and in specific courses that include curriculum structured around sustainability. Tahoma has been presented many Green School awards every year since 2012.

    Glacier Park Elementary

    Glacier Park is a K-5 school serving roughly 950 students. School is in session from 9:10 am to 3:40 pm Monday through Thursday with early release on Friday’s at 2:10 pm. Glacier Park offers a number of “Zero Hour” classes before and after school to further the opportunity for students growth.

    Principal Chris Thomas came to Glacier Park in 2010. Prior to this, he spent 15 years in the Bellevue School District as a teacher and administrator. Chris grew up in the Tahoma School District before continuing on to Boise State University to earn a B.A. in Communication and then to City University for his Masters in Education and Administrative Credentials.

    Lake Wilderness Elementary School

    Lake Wilderness serves more than 1,000 children grades K-5 with over 60 teachers and a great Reading Assistance Program. The school day commences at 9:10 am and releases students at 3:40 pm Monday through Friday. This elementary school offers “Zero Hour” classes before and after school to further the opportunity for students growth. Lake Wilderness is currently undergoing $42.8 million construction project slated for completion in August 2017.

    Rock Creek is known for its innovative curriculum, with emphasis on thinking skills, thinking behaviors, basic skills, the Tahoma Outcomes & Indicators and Washington State’s Essential Learnings. The school day runs from 9:10 am to 3:40 pm and offers “Zero Hour” classes before and after school to further the opportunity for students growth.

    Principal Fritz Gere was born and raised in Snoqualmie Valley and earned a B.A. in Elementary Education, from Northwest University, as well as a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Administrative Credentials from City University.

    In my seventeen years in education I have served six years as an elementary principal in the White River School District, two years as the Dean of Students at Glacier Park Elementary School and eight years as a primary and intermediate teacher at Rock Creek Elementary. Additionally, I have taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in education local universities. Areas I am especially passionate about include differentiated instruction, mathematics, integrated curriculum and the arts. ~ Fritz Gere

    IMG_0270Principal Jerry Gaston completed undergraduate work at Gonzaga, has two degrees from Seattle University, and competed additional post graduate work at Seattle Pacific University in Educational Administration. Jerry has worked in education for over 30 years, having been a teacher,reading intervention specialist, Educational Assistant, Dean of Students, Instructional Coach and currently a proud Principal.

    Cedar River is currently under construction. School days start at 8:30 am and run until 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday with early release on Friday’s at 1:30 pm. Staff members share a commitment to develop strong relationships and create a sense of belonging for all students as they grow into contributing citizens.

    Principal Sean Cassidy graduated from Centralia College and University of Washington. He has previously worked in Issaquah and Lake Washington School Districts, in education for 17 years.

    Junior High School

    You may notice that Tahoma School District has not only a middle school, but a junior high as well. They do this to keep the class sizes smaller. Tahoma Junior High School serves students in 8th & 9th grade, preparing them for high school and beyond by challenging creativity, engaging in community service, and encouraging creativity. The morning bell rings at 7:40 am and dismissal is 2:15 pm Monday through Thursday. Fridays are early release, sending students home at 12:45.

    Tahoma High School runs on a unique block schedule. Students classes are divided into Blue and Gold days, so they attend 3 classes a day rather than the usual 6 classes. This allows for more time focused on each topic and deeper learning.  30 minutes of each day is dedicated to academic preparation, and early release on Fridays so students have an 1.5 hours designated for students who need extra help with curriculum.
